31 Days of Goosebumps Part 1 - 2. Stay Out of the Basement

I could not for the life of me remember any of the twists and turns of this book. I remembered the cover and that the phrase “Stay Out of the Basement” appears multiple times but that was the extent of it.

The book follows Casey and Margret. Their dad is a great plant scientist who has recently been fired from his job. He begins spending lots of time in his basement working with the plants and has forbidden his students from coming and looking around.

The kids keep going into the basement and while down there find themselves being attacked by the plants and other weird situations. Margret keeps finding her father doing weird things like sleeping in dirt, bleeding green blood and his hair being replaced with plants.

Eventually it’s revealed that their father is actually a giant plant impersonating their father. Margret figures out which is her real father and kills the plant monster. After everything’s settled and they begin moving the plants outside a flower tells Margret that he is her real father.

THE GOOD: The ending. So far this is my favorite ending I’ve read so far (it should be noted I read books 5 and 10 previously due to a delivery delay on other books). It’s a nice eerie (but still ridiculous) ending.

THE BAD: The book is pretty boring for the most part. It takes place over just a week and is only 123 pages long but it feels like it drags on forever. The ‘weird twists’ feel less weird as something is already very clearly ‘up’. The most interesting stuff is in the last 3 or 4 chapters.

THE TV SHOW EPISODE: This episode was a pretty faithful adaptation of the book. I really have no complaints, all the creepy elements remained, there was no major special effects and the ending retains it’s creepiness. It was also less boring to just see it than to read it.
